Haji Wright struck deep into stoppage time to rescue a 1-1 draw for Coventry City and prevent Norwich City from pulling off an extraordinary smash-and-grab at the Coventry Building Society Arena. The Sky Blues dominated almost from first whistle to last, piled up chances and hit the woodwork, yet trailed from the 17th minute until the sixth of nine added on, when Wright finally forced the ball over the line from close range.
Mathias Kvistgaarden's first goal for Norwich, clinically taken from Jakov Medic's through-ball, had the Canaries on course for an unlikely victory despite spending most of the afternoon under siege. Coventry racked up 28 shots but only four on target and one goal from an expected goals figure of 4.02, while Norwich scored with their only effort on target. In the end, a late, scruffy equaliser ensured the home side's unbeaten start to the Championship campaign remained intact, while leaving Norwich to balance disappointment at conceding so late with relief at escaping with a point.
Blistering Sky Blues Start, Clinical Norwich Response
Coventry announced their intentions inside the opening five minutes. Tatsuhiro Sakamoto, lively throughout on the flank, whipped a brilliant ball into the box that picked out Ephron Mason-Clark making a darting run across the near post. His diving header beat Vladan Kovacevic but not the woodwork, crashing back off the upright with the goalkeeper beaten, before a follow-up effort from the forward was deflected narrowly over.
