Sheffield United were the sharper side through most of the first half and should have gone ahead after 11 minutes. Dom Hyam slipped at a crucial moment, allowing Harrison Burrows to square for an unmarked Patrick Bamford, but the striker guided his close-range chance wide when the opening seemed certain to produce the first goal.
