Willock's late finish sends Newcastle past Millwall into Carabao Cup fourth round

· Match Report

Joe Willock scored in the 80th minute as Newcastle United won 1-0 at Millwall to reach the fourth round of the Carabao Cup. The Premier League side dominated on the numbers but needed a late goal, after the Championship hosts had come close to an upset.

Newcastle had 63% of the possession and 25 shots to Millwall's nine, with 15 corners to the hosts' one, yet only six of those efforts were on target. It was the first meeting between the two clubs since 1993.

Newcastle Press, Millwall Hold Firm

Newcastle had the better of the opening exchanges. Jacob Murphy sent an early shot harmlessly over, and in the 15th minute Filip Marschall, making his Millwall debut in goal, could only push away a Willock strike. It fell to left-back Elkan Baggott instead of Yoane Wissa. Sven Botman then headed a Murphy corner narrowly over at the far post.
