Willock and Hall end Hull's unbeaten start as Newcastle hold on

· Match Report

Newcastle United beat Hull City 2-1 at St James' Park on Saturday afternoon to end the newly promoted side's unbeaten start to their Premier League return, Joe Willock and Lewis Hall scoring inside the first six minutes before a second-half siege nearly produced an equaliser.

Harvey Barnes made both goals, a missed first-half penalty let Hull back into the contest, and Newcastle, fielding a youthful, injury-hit side, spent much of the second half under pressure. It was a much-needed response five days after a 4-1 defeat at Leeds.

The numbers tell a different story from the scoreline: Opta credits Hull with 22 shots to Newcastle's 12, even though Newcastle held 56% of the possession.
