Wigan sign Manchester City defender Finley Burns

Wigan Athletic have signed the Manchester City defender Finley Burns on a three-year deal.

Burns, 23, came through City's academy but made only one senior appearance for the club, in an EFL Cup win over Wycombe in September 2021. He has spent the past five seasons out on loan, with spells at Swansea, Stevenage, Hull City and Reading.

The move is Wigan's latest addition to a summer rebuild of the League One squad under the manager Gary Caldwell. The club released eight players at the end of last season, including the captain Jason Kerr, who made 150 appearances during almost five years at Wigan and won the League One title in his first season there, and the defender Will Aimson, who made 98 appearances after joining in 2024.

Caldwell has already brought in the wing-back Connor Barrett from Walsall and the forward Akeel Higgins from West Bromwich Albion this summer, both on multi-year deals, as Wigan look to replace the experience that left the club.
