Danny Welbeck marked his Chelsea debut with a goal and Luton Town's Hakeem Odoffin turned in a second as the hosts beat the League One side 2-0 in the Carabao Cup second round, a result that never looked in danger despite a first half in which Luton's goalkeeper kept the score level.
Welbeck, who joined in the summer, nodded in at the far post in the 49th minute from Malo Gusto's cross. Odoffin put Estêvão Willian's low delivery into his own net in the 78th. Chelsea next host Leeds United in the third round.
The tie came with Xabi Alonso naming a strong side, with Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers both starting, and with Enzo Fernández left out of the squad amid links with Manchester City.
