Vinícius Júnior has signed a new six-year contract with Real Madrid, keeping him at the Bernabéu until 30 June 2032 and ending Arsenal's hopes of bringing him to the Premier League this summer.
The club confirmed the agreement on Thursday evening, hours after a meeting at which Real Madrid director general José Ángel Sánchez and chief scout Juni Calafat presented an improved offer to the player's agent, Frederico Pena. Madrid had opened talks early, in February 2025, mindful of having profited themselves when they signed Kylian Mbappé from Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer in 2024. But a bonus dispute stalled negotiations by that May, and Vinícius's camp chose to wait and see how the season went before returning to the table.
That season proved difficult. Under then-manager Xabi Alonso, Vinícius lost his automatic starting place and clashed with the coaching staff after being substituted during a Clásico, before being whistled by home fans in January. His form recovered under Alonso's interim successor, Álvaro Arbeloa, but talks stayed on hold until after the World Cup, where Brazil were eliminated by Norway in the last 16.
Arsenal's interest hardened after the tournament. Madrid believed the Premier League club were the only plausible destination if Vinícius left; sources said Arteta's side had been in touch with the player's camp, though those close to Vinícius denied any contact. The club responded with an offer of around €22m a year, up from the €20m proposed in 2025 but still some €10m short of Vinícius's demands; in Wednesday's meeting it agreed to go higher still, though the final figure is unconfirmed.
