Real Madrid completed a 5-1 aggregate victory over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium, knocking Pep Guardiola's side out of the Champions League at the last-16 stage for the third consecutive season. Vinicius Junior scored either side of half-time, the first from the penalty spot and the second deep into stoppage time, to settle a chaotic tie that City had needed to flip from a 3-0 first-leg deficit.
The decisive moment arrived in the first half, when captain Bernardo Silva was sent off for a deliberate handball on the goalline. Gianluigi Donnarumma went the wrong way as Vinicius converted the resulting penalty, before Erling Haaland's strike on the stroke of half-time briefly raised the volume in Manchester. Real, who progressed without a single minute from Jude Bellingham and only 20 from Kylian Mbappe across the tie, were ultimately too much for a depleted, 10-man City.
A breathless opening as both teams trade chances
Federico Valverde, the hat-trick hero of the first leg, could have killed the tie in the opening minute when he found himself through on goal, only to fail to get enough lift on his shot and allow it to dribble through to Donnarumma. From there, City poured forward and Thibaut Courtois went to work: Rayan Cherki was denied at close range, Rodri's rising effort was pushed over, and Haaland's first-time strike was brilliantly tipped clear.
