Vicente and Klarer Fire Birmingham Past Wrexham to Dent Play-Off Dream

· Match Report

Birmingham City ended a three-game losing run and dented Wrexham's Championship play-off hopes with a controlled 2-0 victory at St Andrew's. Carlos Vicente's header shortly after half-time and a close-range finish from captain Christoph Klarer were enough to settle a contest that the hosts dominated for long periods.

The win, Birmingham's first in over a month and just their second in nine matches, lifts Chris Davies' side to 15th in the table. For Wrexham, defeat leaves them seventh, four points adrift of the top six with four matches of the regular season remaining, their dream of an unprecedented fourth successive promotion now hanging by a thread.

Needle and Early Birmingham Pressure

The meeting of two sides who both earned automatic promotion from League One last season had an edge to it, and the encounter was at times a feisty one. It was Davies' men, though, who set the tone from the outset, flying out of the traps and pinning Wrexham back. Tomoki Iwata, August Priske and Ibrahim Osman all threatened early, with Arthur Okonkwo forced into a couple of comfortable saves to deny headers from Osman and Priske.
