Valverde's sumptuous hat-trick leaves Manchester City on the brink at the Bernabeu

— Match Report

Federico Valverde delivered a first-half hat-trick of the highest class as Real Madrid stunned Manchester City 3-0 in their Champions League last-16 first leg, leaving Pep Guardiola's side facing a mountain to climb in the return at the Etihad.

Real were without injured pair Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham, as well as long-term absentee Rodrygo, and arguably went in as second favourites. But the Spanish giants once again found another gear under the Champions League lights, with their captain Valverde the architect of a ruthless 22-minute spell that effectively decided the tie.

City start brightly before unravelling

Manchester City actually began the more positive side, with Jeremy Doku posing an early threat down the left and Trent Alexander-Arnold's right-back flank repeatedly targeted in Guardiola's ultra-attacking 4-2-2-2. Brahim Diaz did force a point-blank save from Gianluigi Donnarumma at the other end, but City looked the brighter team in the opening exchanges.
