Scott Twine scored twice in the second half as Bristol City overturned an early deficit to beat Southampton 3-1 at Ashton Gate, climbing to fourth in the Championship and deepening the pressure on Saints boss Will Still. Adam Armstrong had given the visitors a deserved lead with a deft chip, only for Anis Mehmeti to level within three minutes, before Twine’s quick-fire brace decided an increasingly open contest.
Southampton controlled long stretches of the game, hit the crossbar and carved out several gilt‑edged chances, but a combination of profligate finishing and defensive errors left them empty-handed. City, sluggish for the first half-hour, grew into the match after Mehmeti’s equaliser, tightened up their pressing after the break and then punished the visitors ruthlessly in transition to secure just their second home win of the season and leave Saints down in 17th, with only two wins from their last 11 league fixtures.

Southampton arrived at Ashton Gate looking to respond to an uninspiring 0-0 draw at home to Swansea, and their start suggested they might do exactly that. Will Still’s side dominated possession in the opening stages, regularly finding spaces between Bristol City’s lines as the hosts struggled to get their press right. Cameron Archer twice broke in behind the defence, sending one half-chance over the bar, while Adam Armstrong had a low drive pushed away by the diving Radek Vitek in the City goal.
