Tranmere Rovers open League Two season with 2-0 win over Shrewsbury Town

· Match Report

Tranmere Rovers began the League Two season with a 2-0 win over Shrewsbury Town at Prenton Park, goals either side of half-time from Jordan Davies and Charlie Whitaker enough to see off a Shrewsbury side who had the better of the underlying numbers. Davies opened the scoring in the 34th minute; Whitaker doubled the lead in the 62nd. Shrewsbury finished with more of the ball, 57.2% possession to Tranmere's 42.8%, and more shots, 15 to 7 with five on target to four, but could not turn that territory into goals.

Five yellow cards were shown and no player was sent off. Tranmere's Joel Senior was booked in the 75th minute, Shrewsbury's Josh Davison in the 79th, scorer Whitaker in the 86th and Zane Okoro in the 90th; Shrewsbury's Isaac England was also cautioned in the 86th minute, shortly after coming on as a substitute. Both sides made four changes, Tranmere withdrawing Davies himself in the 72nd minute.

The result was the opening league fixture of the season for both clubs. It lifts Tranmere to 5th in the early table on three points, with Shrewsbury 21st on none.
