Thomas Thunderbolt Lifts Newport Clear in Relegation Six-Pointer

· Match Report

Joe Thomas picked the perfect moment to score his first goal of the season as Newport County edged Harrogate Town 2-1 in a tense relegation battle at Rodney Parade. The right-wing-back's spectacular second-half strike settled a game that swung from end to end and leaves the visitors pinned to the bottom of League Two.

Christian Fuchs' side now sit 22nd but, crucially, have opened a four-point buffer over the bottom two with three games to play. Their fate remains in their own hands, even with a final-day trip to Barrow still to come.

Opoku Strikes Then Harrogate Hit Back

Newport went at their visitors from the start and after Harri Biggins threatened with two good efforts, Nathan Opoku claimed an eighth-minute opener. Ben Lloyd sent the forward through from the left and Opoku finished decisively into the top corner past Henry Gray.
