Szmodics' landmark strike sends Derby past Portsmouth and keeps both battles intense

ยท Match Report

Sam Szmodics scored his 100th league goal to give Derby County a 1-0 win at Portsmouth, a result that kept the Rams firmly in the Championship play-off race and deepened the home side's anxiety near the bottom. The decisive moment arrived in the eighth minute, and Derby protected it with a mixture of defensive resolve and a persistent threat on the break.

Portsmouth were not short of efforts. John Mousinho's side finished with 27 shots, their highest total of the season, but too often their final ball or finish let them down and Richard O'Donnell was rarely beaten. As Derby ended a three-match losing run away from home, Pompey slumped to a fourth straight defeat at Fratton Park, extended their winless run against Derby to 12 matches, and remained just a point above the drop zone.

An early opening, and a ruthless finish

Derby took the lead with the first clear chance of the night. Derry Murkin's corner was only half-cleared by Jacob Brown, and the loose ball dropped invitingly for Szmodics in the middle of the box. He controlled it calmly before smashing his finish past Nicholas Schmid for what proved to be the only goal.
