Ipswich Town climbed into the Championship's top four with a late 2-0 victory at Hull City, as goals from Marcelino Nunez and Chuba Akpom turned a previously dour contest on its head. After a first half in which Ipswich failed to register a shot on target, the visitors struck twice in four second-half minutes to secure a third successive away win and extend their unbeaten run to six matches.
Hull, who were seeking to stretch their unbeaten home sequence to seven games, created the better openings for long spells and twice hit the woodwork over the course of the night. But the Tigers were punished for two lapses in concentration late on, slipping to a third defeat in four matches, dropping to eighth and failing to score for the first time in 14 games as Ipswich's greater cutting edge ultimately proved decisive.
Hull on top before the break but wasteful in front of goal
Hull went into the game without suspended midfielder Matt Crooks but with a landmark appearance for Lewis Coyle, the full-back making his 200th outing for the club. After a fairly nondescript opening 10 minutes, it was the hosts who fashioned the first moment of real ambition when Joe Gelhardt, buoyed by six goals in his previous seven games, spotted Christian Walton off his line and attempted an audacious lob from just beyond the centre circle. The ball cleared the Ipswich goalkeeper but drifted harmlessly wide.
