Southampton eased into the English League Cup third round with a 2-0 win away at Colchester United's JobServe Community Stadium, watched by a crowd of 5,822. Southampton dominated the ball throughout, 74.1% possession to Colchester's 25.9%, and finished with 25 attempts on goal to the hosts' 11, five of them on target against four.
Colchester made an early change at the interval, sending on Sam Kuffour for Jack Tucker. Southampton introduced Cyle Larin in the 61st minute, and it was the striker who broke the deadlock ten minutes later, converting in the 71st minute. Colchester rang the changes through the second half, sending on Leon Chiwome and Milton Oni in the 67th minute, Paul Digby in the 73rd and Jake Leake in the 77th, but could not find a way back into the tie.
Southampton had the last word deep into stoppage time. Romeo Akachukwu, on for the injured Kuryu Matsuki six minutes earlier, scored in the 91st minute to make it 2-0. Southampton also won five corners to Colchester's one; there were no bookings for either side in the match.
