Stoke City have signed the Ipswich Town right-back Ben Johnson on a season-long loan, the latest move in a summer of recruitment as the Championship club target a sustained promotion push.

Johnson, 26, began his career at West Ham, where he made 69 Premier League appearances across six seasons and was part of the squad that won the Uefa Conference League in 2023. He joined Ipswich for their 2024-25 return to the Premier League, a campaign that ended in relegation, and played 17 games last season as the club won promotion straight back to the top flight.

His arrival follows that of his Ipswich team-mate George Hirst, who signed for Stoke on a permanent three-year contract on Thursday. Johnson becomes the club's seventh new signing of the summer as Stoke chase a sustained promotion challenge, eight years after their own relegation from the Premier League. At Stoke he also reunites with Aaron Cresswell, a fellow member of that Conference League-winning West Ham squad.

"Ben has been trusted to play at the highest level from a young age, and, for both club and country, he has been involved in successful teams," Stoke sporting director Jonathan Walters said. "He knows the Championship well, having been involved in Ipswich's promotion last season."
