Oliver Norburn turned the ball into his own net in the 47th minute to put the home side ahead, and substitute Róbert Bozeník doubled Stoke's lead in the 81st minute to settle the contest in front of an attendance of 10,157.
Stoke had the better of possession, 59.7% to Oldham's 40.3%, and a shot count edge of 11 to nine, though Oldham were more accurate, putting four efforts on target to Stoke's three; corners were shared three apiece. Stoke's Bosun Lawal was booked in the 18th minute and Bae Jun-Ho in the 67th, both yellows, the latter for time wasting; Oldham's Ryan Delaney was cautioned in the 30th minute for a foul.
