Southampton produced a ruthless display at St Mary’s to thrash Queens Park Rangers 5-0 and underline their growing Championship play-off credentials. Finn Azaz set the tone with an early strike before Kuryu Matsuki’s first two Championship goals, Leo Scienza’s composed finish and a thunderous James Bree volley completed a one-sided scoreline.
Tonda Eckert’s side, now seven league games unbeaten, climbed from 11th to seventh, moving to within four points of the top six. For QPR, who slipped to 13th and are now seven points adrift of the play-off places, a chastening evening was compounded by the loss of influential midfielder Nicolas Madsen to injury and by goals conceded at the worst possible moments in each half.
Early Fine Margins Before Saints Take Control
Both sides felt they might have had a penalty before Southampton’s dominance truly took hold. QPR’s Amadou Mbengue went to ground after getting past Ryan Manning in the area, only for referee Oliver Langford to wave appeals away. Moments later, at the other end, Taylor Harwood-Bellis appeared to be pulled back in the box by former Southampton defender Ronnie Edwards, but again nothing was given. Those incidents hinted at a competitive opening, yet within minutes the hosts began to dictate the terms.
