Southampton's League Cup campaign ended at the third-round stage as West Ham United won 4-1 at St Mary's Stadium. West Ham advance to the next round; Southampton are out of the competition.
Léo Scienza put Southampton ahead in the 9th minute, but Joshua Ajala levelled for West Ham in the 40th and put the visitors in front three minutes into the second half, in the 52nd. Valentín Castellanos made it 3-1 in the 74th and Jarrod Bowen added a fourth in the 83rd, both introduced from the bench earlier in the half.
Southampton's Cameron Bragg (25th minute) and scorer Scienza (33rd) were both booked, the only cards of the match; there were no red cards and no VAR interventions. West Ham used five substitutes in all, four of them sent on together in the 58th minute in the change that brought on both second-half scorers, Castellanos and Bowen. Southampton made five substitutions of their own from the hour mark, without finding a way back.
