Sam Smith's second-half strike earned Wrexham a 1-0 win at Sheffield Wednesday and lifted the Welsh club back into the Championship's play-off places at Hillsborough. The result condemned Henrik Pedersen's side to a sixth successive league defeat and left them rooted to the foot of the table.
After an uneventful first half in which Wrexham controlled much of the possession but lacked their usual ruthlessness, Smith struck in the 58th minute from Issa Kabore's cross to notch his sixth goal of the season. The Owls mounted a late rally, going close through Bailey Cadamarteri and Jamal Lowe, but Arthur Okonkwo and Matty James preserved an eighth clean sheet of the campaign as the visitors claimed a fourth straight away victory and Wednesday's goal drought stretched to seven league games.
Contrasting fortunes frame a pivotal afternoon
Both sides arrived at Hillsborough with their seasons pulling in opposite directions. Wrexham had lost just once in their previous eight matches in all competitions and knew victory was essential to keep their play-off charge on track after Derby's win on Friday night had briefly nudged them out of the top six, while Wednesday were desperate to halt a grim slide that has left them bottom of the table.
