Shrewsbury Town beat Salford City 4-3 on penalties after normal time finished 1-1 in this English League Cup first-round tie at AIG Stadium, with Shrewsbury advancing to the next round. Josh Davison put Shrewsbury ahead two minutes into the second half, in the 47th, before substitute Kyrell Malcolm equalised for Salford in the 77th. Neither side found a winner in the 90 minutes, sending the tie to penalties.
Both teams finished with ten men. Shrewsbury's Sam Stubbs was sent off for a second yellow card in the 72nd minute; Salford's Will Aimson followed with a straight red for violent conduct in the 96th. Salford had much the better of the ball, 71.6% possession to Shrewsbury's 28.4%, and out-shot the visitors 21 attempts to 11, five on target to three, but could not turn that dominance into a winner.
Salford went first in the shootout and missed five of their eight kicks: Macaulay Langstaff, Daniel Udoh, Ryan Graydon and Abraham Odoh were all saved, and Oliver Turton was off target. Only Jorge Grant, Joe Powell and Adebola Oluwo converted for Salford. Shrewsbury scored four through Joseph Gbodé, Jay Turner-Cooke, Will Boyle and Arkell Jude-Boyd to win it 4-3 on penalties.
