Sheffield Wednesday beat 10-man Bolton Wanderers 1-0 at Hillsborough to reach the third round of the English League Cup. Bolton were reduced to 10 men in the 55th minute when Xavier Simons was shown a straight red card, the same minute in which Sheffield Wednesday's Harry Gray was booked. Wednesday made the extra man count 14 minutes later: Jamal Lowe, on as a substitute for Mason Burstow seven minutes earlier, scored the only goal of the game in the 69th minute.
Bolton had the better of possession at 54.6% to Wednesday's 45.4%, but Wednesday were the more direct side in front of goal, putting three of their 13 attempts on target against Bolton's one from 11. Akin Famewo was booked for Bolton in the 36th minute and Luca Stephenson followed in the 82nd.
Both sides used their bench heavily in the closing stages. Alongside Lowe's introduction, Wednesday also sent on Louie Barry for Jarvis Thornton in the 62nd minute, with further changes bringing on Sean Fusire, Will Grainger and Liam Palmer between the 78th and 84th minutes. Bolton made five substitutions after going down to 10 men, the last of them in the 75th minute.
