Southampton settled the match in a devastating early spell, beating Oxford United 2-0 through Cyle Larin's close-range finish and a magnificent long-range effort from Shea Charles. The victory made it nine Championship wins in 12 games for Saints, extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to 14, and kept them firmly inside the top six.
Oxford arrived after three wins from four matches and for their first league fixture in Southampton for almost 40 years, but they never fully recovered from conceding twice so quickly. The visitors still carved out moments, mostly from set-pieces and a better spell after half-time, yet Yunus Konak fired over, Will Lankshear missed their clearest chance when clean through, and substitute Nicholas Oyekunle could not make a late opening count.
A frantic opening tilts the contest
Oxford were the first side to threaten when a near-post corner caused uncertainty, only for goalkeeper Daniel Peretz to gather at the second attempt. His quick throw immediately turned defence into attack, and Southampton cut through the visitors with one sharp move as Taylor Harwood-Bellis split the defence with a pass to Tom Fellows, who rolled the ball across the six-yard box for Larin to prod home.
