Shea Charles stuns Arsenal as Southampton reach FA Cup semi-finals

— Match Report

Championship Southampton produced one of the FA Cup quarter-finals' great upsets, beating Premier League leaders Arsenal 2-1 at St Mary's thanks to a late Shea Charles strike that sent the home support into delirium and booked a Wembley semi-final.

Ross Stewart had given Saints the lead before half-time, Viktor Gyokeres levelled for Mikel Arteta's side just after the hour, and substitute Charles won it five minutes from time to end Arsenal's hopes of a league and cup double in the space of a fortnight after their Carabao Cup final loss to Manchester City.

An ambush built on tempo

Arsenal arrived as overwhelming favourites, but they were dealing with obvious fitness problems after 11 players had withdrawn from international duty. Even so, Arteta named a senior side containing captain Martin Odegaard, Kai Havertz, Ben White and Gabriel Magalhaes, with Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka absent. Southampton, on a 14-match unbeaten run under Tonda Eckert, did not retreat. They pressed the Gunners' back line from the first minute and looked to release the pacy Tom Fellows and the lively Leo Scienza in behind.
