Antoine Semenyo's predatory finish on the stroke of half-time earned Manchester City a fraught 1-0 victory over an impressive but wasteful Leeds United at a raucous Elland Road, cutting Arsenal's advantage at the top of the Premier League to two points. On a night when City were without Leeds-born Erling Haaland, their Ghanaian forward provided the clinical touch that the hosts so badly lacked.
Leeds, whose relegation fight has gathered momentum in recent months, dominated large spells of the first half and carved out a succession of chances, only to find their finishing and Gianluigi Donnarumma in stubborn mood. City, below their fluent best and forced to endure long periods under pressure, survived that onslaught and struck in first-half stoppage time through Semenyo before digging in after the break to secure a fourth straight league victory. Leeds stay six points clear of the bottom three but may look back on this as a night of opportunity squandered.
Leeds fly out of the blocks but waste their moment
Elland Road under the floodlights has been a difficult place to visit this season, and City felt the full force of it from the opening whistle. Leeds have lost just three of their last 15 league games, their survival push fuelled in part by the anger of Phil Foden's stoppage-time winner in the reverse fixture in November, and they played like a side determined not to be stung late again. Their intense press immediately unsettled City, with white shirts swarming over any sky blue in possession.
