Manchester City took firm control of their Carabao Cup semi-final against holders Newcastle United, with new signing Antoine Semenyo and substitute Rayan Cherki the scorers in a 2-0 first-leg win at St James' Park.
Semenyo, who only completed his move from Bournemouth less than a week ago in a deal reported at £65m and £62.5m, finished at the back post after Jeremy Doku's cross was hooked on by Bernardo Silva. Cherki then swept in a stoppage-time second to leave Pep Guardiola's side heavy favourites to reach Wembley before the return leg at the Etihad Stadium on 4 February.
Newcastle squander their best openings
Newcastle had the better of the first-half chances and Yoane Wissa was the principal culprit, scooping over the bar from close range after a slick move involving Joelinton, Anthony Gordon and Jacob Murphy released him with only James Trafford to beat.
