Tottenham Hotspur beat Charlton Athletic 5-1 in the Carabao Cup second round on Wednesday night, a response Roberto De Zerbi's side badly needed four days after an opening-weekend Premier League defeat at Brentford.
Mikey Moore broke the deadlock in the 40th minute, cutting inside from the right and beating goalkeeper Tiernan Brooks with a left-footed strike; it was only his second goal for the club, after one against Elfsborg in the Europa League in January 2025. Dominic Solanke doubled the lead four minutes later, sweeping in a clinical finish after hesitant Charlton defending inside the box.
Charlton's night had already been complicated by injury: centre-backs Collins Sichenje and Billy Koumetio both went off inside the first 15 minutes, Sichenje stretchered off in obvious distress. Manager Nathan Jones had made ten changes from the side that had won at West Ham United in the Championship at the weekend, with Saturday's visit of Preston North End the higher priority.
Kevin Danso, on as a half-time substitute, headed in with his first touch in the 66th minute from a Mateus Fernandes free-kick. Sávio then made an instant impact on his debut: introduced from the bench, he cut inside and drilled a low shot into the corner in the 81st minute, then turned provider three minutes later when a second driven effort deflected in off Ben Davies for Spurs' fifth. Lloyd Jones headed in a consolation for Charlton in the 86th minute.
