Joe Powell scored his first goal for Salford City, a free-kick in the 51st minute that slipped through Port Vale goalkeeper Jackson Smith, as the hosts beat League Two's bottom club 1-0 at AIG Stadium.
It was Salford's second win in a row, following a 2-1 home victory over Newport County on 1 September. They went into the game 20th in the table with three points from four league matches; Vale, 24th with two points, began the day bottom and were unable to lift themselves off the foot of the division.
Vale Make the Early Running
Port Vale created the first notable chance in the 26th minute, when Connor Hall met a Kyle Dempsey free-kick with a header that came back off the crossbar. Five minutes later Jordan Lawrence-Gabriel hit a powerful shot that Will Norris saved sharply.
