Southampton delivered a statement victory in the Championship promotion race, ending Coventry City's six-match winning run with a 2-1 success at the CBS Arena that inflicted only the leaders' second home defeat of the season and pulled Saints back to within three points of the play-off places.
Flynn Downes marked his 100th appearance for Southampton by opening the scoring early in the second half, reacting quickest after Kuryu Matsuki's cross had come back off the post, before Matsuki himself doubled the advantage from a James Bree corner. Victor Torp's stoppage-time penalty set up a tense finale, but an inspired Daniel Peretz and some resolute late defending preserved the visitors' 12th game unbeaten in all competitions and trimmed Coventry's lead at the summit to seven points.
Leaders tested in a tight, tactical first half
Both sides came into the contest in outstanding form. Frank Lampard's Coventry had equalled a club record of six consecutive league wins and sat top of the table, while Tonda Eckert's Southampton had climbed from 21st to seventh on the back of 13 wins from 24 league games and a long unbeaten run. Perhaps inevitably, the opening exchanges were cagey. Saints settled the quicker, content to slow the tempo and take the sting out of a Coventry side playing their third match in a week, and the first clear chance fell to the visitors when Cyle Larin miscued after chesting down a Matsuki header, his hooked effort squirming just past the far post.
