Charlton Athletic produced a devastating second-half burst to stun previously unbeaten-at-home Ipswich Town, scoring three times in 12 minutes to claim a 3-0 victory at Portman Road. Sonny Carey, Macaulay Gillesphey and substitute Miles Leaburn were the scorers as Nathan Jones’s side earned just their second away win of the campaign and a fourth victory in six league games.
Ipswich, who had won their previous three home matches and had put 14 goals past Charlton across their last three meetings, dominated for long stretches and racked up around 30 shots. But Chuba Akpom struck the bar, Kasey McAteer had a goal ruled out for offside and a series of other chances went begging. When Charlton’s opportunity came after the interval, they were far more clinical, inflicting Town’s first home defeat of the season and a second successive league loss.
Ipswich on Top Early as Chances Pile Up but No Breakthrough
The pattern was set quickly. Ipswich moved the ball with confidence and penned Charlton back in the opening stages. Marcelino Nunez tested Thomas Kaminski with a powerful drive from just outside the area, and when Ivan Azon followed up the loose ball, the Charlton goalkeeper recovered to smother at the second attempt. Nunez then thumped another effort that struck visiting captain Greg Docherty, briefly flooring him, before Kasey McAteer blazed over from a promising position as the hosts set a relentless tempo.
