Rudoni's Return Tips Pulsating Contest as Coventry Move 11 Points Clear

· Match Report

Coventry City strengthened their grip on the Championship summit with a 3-2 win over Derby County in a game that swung repeatedly before Jack Rudoni settled it. Back from injury after being out since February 28, Rudoni came off the bench to score twice and push Frank Lampard's side closer to a Premier League return.

Frank Onyeka's superb early strike gave Coventry lift-off, but Derby twice hit back through Ben Brereton Diaz, first with a header and later from the penalty spot. Rudoni's second goal, scored with 10 minutes remaining and only three minutes after Derby had made it 2-2, finally broke the visitors' resistance.

An early spark became an open contest

Derby had begun brightly, yet it was Coventry who struck first when Onyeka curled a fabulous effort home from range. It was the kind of goal that seemed to set up a comfortable evening for the leaders, but the rest of the night refused to follow a simple script.
