Rotherham United have signed the defender Sonny Aljofree following his release by Manchester United this summer. The 22-year-old, who can play at centre-back or right-back, has signed a two-year contract with the League Two club, who hold an option for an additional year.
Aljofree won the FA Youth Cup with United in the 2021-22 season but did not make a first-team appearance for the Premier League club. He had loan spells at Altrincham and Accrington Stanley before a season with Notts County last term, where he made 11 appearances, including 10 starts, though United cut the loan short in December having not featured him since the end of September. He had been training with Rotherham on trial throughout pre-season.
He is the son of the former Plymouth Argyle player Hasney Aljofree.
The move is Rotherham's latest in a busy rebuild following relegation to League Two, following the arrivals of forwards Aaron Nemane and Fabio Tavares, midfielders Ossama Ashley and Jamie Jellis, defenders Ewan Otoo and Kieran Ngwenya, striker Tom Bradshaw and the loan signing of full-back Jili Buyabu. Alex Bruce's side open the season at home to West Bromwich Albion in the Carabao Cup first round on Saturday.
