Swansea City earned their first win of the Championship season with a 1-0 victory over Sheffield United, thanks to a composed second-half finish from Brazilian forward Ronald. His 66th-minute strike rewarded the hosts' control of the contest and condemned United to a second league defeat in as many games, and a third successive loss in all competitions under new head coach Ruben Selles.
While the scoreline was narrow, the pattern of the game was clear. Swansea dominated long spells, particularly before and after the interval, created the better chances and were energised by their substitutes, whereas the Blades offered very little attacking threat and failed to register a shot on target. The Swans' only frustration was their failure to add to Ronald's goal against opponents who looked a shadow of the side that reached the play-off final last season.
Swansea on top but wasteful before the break
Both clubs came into the afternoon looking for a response after damaging opening weeks. Swansea had slipped to a 1-0 defeat at Middlesbrough on the opening weekend, while Sheffield United had been thumped 4-1 at home by Bristol City and then knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Birmingham. It was the hosts who reacted more convincingly, taking early control of midfield and pushing United back.
