Rochdale sign Aston Villa midfielder Kane Taylor on loan

Rochdale have signed the Aston Villa midfielder Kane Taylor on loan until January. The 21-year-old scored twice in 16 appearances during a loan spell in League Two with Oldham Athletic last season.

Taylor is yet to make his senior debut for Villa, though he scored for the club's under-21s in an EFL Trophy defeat by Wigan on Tuesday.

"We're delighted to get Kane in. He brings a lot of athleticism and quality to the team, alongside experience in League Two," Rochdale head coach Ian Watson said.

The move continues a busy first transfer window for Watson, who joined in June on a three-year deal after leading South Shields to a National League North play-off final. He has since brought in the defenders Laurence Maguire and Sam Sherring on free transfers and added loan signings including the Derby County forward Dajaune Brown, as Rochdale build a new-look squad following promotion from the National League via the play-offs. Consolidating their place in the division is seen as the priority for the club's first season back in League Two.
