Chelsea claimed their first win of the Champions League league phase with a narrow 1-0 victory over Benfica at Stamford Bridge, with Richard Rios' 18th-minute own goal proving the difference on a night dominated by the return of Jose Mourinho.
It was Chelsea's first Champions League win since March 2023, and ended a poor sequence of results for Enzo Maresca's side, whose only other recent victory had come in the EFL Cup at League One Lincoln.
A warm welcome for the returning Portuguese
Mourinho, who replaced Bruno Lage at Benfica just 12 days ago, was serenaded by Chelsea supporters before and during the game. The Portuguese made a quiet return, taking his seat without ceremony and blowing a kiss to the home end when his name was sung.
