Kelland Watts' first goal for Cambridge United set the home side on their way to a comfortable 2-0 victory against visiting Newport County, with James Brophy adding a second-half strike to take the game beyond the visitors' reach.
After a scrappy opening, Newport had the first serious attempt when Anthony Glennon's free-kick was punched away by Jake Eastwood. But as Cambridge began to boss possession they grew more threatening, and a late first-half corner proved decisive.
A Corner Breaks the Deadlock
Sullay Kaikai sent a deep ball to the back post and centre-back Watts met it with a strong header that gave Newport goalkeeper Nik Tzanev no chance, the goal arriving seven minutes before half-time.
