Rangers chief executive Jim Gillespie has defended the club's appointment of Derek McInnes by comparing him to the new Germany head coach Jurgen Klopp, telling a shareholders' meeting that Ibrox had targeted what he called a Klopp-type manager rather than a Guardiola-type one, using Pep Guardiola, the former Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Manchester City boss, as his point of contrast.
"It's very simple. There are two different types of managers, you get a Klopp-type manager and you get a Guardiola-type manager," Gillespie said. "Derek McInnes is a Klopp-style manager."
Gillespie said McInnes had been on the club's contingency list since April, months before Danny Rohl's departure was confirmed, and was the only candidate Rangers held talks with once the vacancy arose. "There was only one name that ticked all the boxes for us to go and get and it was Derek," he said.
McInnes, who missed out on winning the Premiership title with Hearts last season on the final day as Celtic won at Parkhead to complete a 14th title in 15 seasons, replaced Rohl after the German left Ibrox following a third placed finish. He has yet to win any of his three competitive games in charge.
