Derek McInnes was honest about the booing. "It was justified, to be honest," he said after Rangers went out of the Europa League at the third qualifying round, beaten 3-2 on aggregate by Jagiellonia Bialystok. "It wasn't good enough. What we served up, particularly second half, wasn't good enough." Then he said the other thing, the one worth pulling apart.
"The club is built for the Champions League and Europa League, but I don't think the team is ready for it and it pains me to say it."
It is the sentence a Rangers manager is supposed to say, and on Thursday night it was doing a lot of work. Lawrence Shankland had levelled the tie from the penalty spot on 19 minutes, his first goal for the club since joining from Hearts. Nik Prelec headed Jagiellonia level on the night on 65. Rangers changed shape and personnel and never got hold of the game again, and the ground emptied early. They now go into a Conference League play-off against Jablonec.
