Aaron Ramsdale saved three penalties in a dramatic shootout as Newcastle United edged Bournemouth 7-6 on spot-kicks to reach the FA Cup fourth round, after a pulsating tie at St James' Park had finished 3-3 following 120 minutes.
The on-loan goalkeeper, who left Bournemouth in the summer, denied Evanilson, Alex Jimenez and finally Bafode Diakite to settle a tie that swung repeatedly before Malick Thiaw's cool sudden-death conversion put Newcastle 7-6 ahead and left Bournemouth needing to score.
Cagey opening with chances at both ends
Eli Junior Kroupi produced the first attempt on goal in the fifth minute, thumping a shot into Ramsdale's midriff after running on to Enes Ünal's knockdown. Two minutes later the hosts should have led, but Djordje Petrovic clawed away Yoane Wissa's curled effort after Nick Woltemade had turned Harvey Barnes's clever flick into his path.
