Birmingham City won 1-0 away at Swansea City in the first round of the Carabao Cup, August Priske's 43rd-minute finish enough to send Birmingham through to round two. Birmingham worked a long free-kick into the Swansea box, Carlos Vincente sending the ball back across goal for Priske to steer into the far corner just before the break. It proved the only goal of the game at the Swansea.com Stadium on Saturday, in one of five all-Championship first-round ties in this year's competition, alongside Middlesbrough against Wrexham, West Ham United against Portsmouth, Queens Park Rangers against Millwall and Derby County against Lincoln City.
Swansea had the better of the ball and the chances without making them count, holding 62% possession to Birmingham's 38% and outshooting the visitors 14 attempts to six, though only two of those were on target to Birmingham's one. Swansea also won the corner count, six to four. Birmingham committed the more fouls, 19 to Swansea's 12, as they defended the lead through the second half. Swansea's Melker Widell was booked in the 20th minute and Cameron Burgess followed in the 61st, cautioned for a foul on Priske; no player was sent off.
Swansea head coach Vitor Matos put the defeat down to missed opportunities at the other end: "Of course, we didn't do the right thing by [going in front in the game]. We could have scored the chances we had and then it would be a different story, but we didn't so Birmingham scored and after that they created the momentum that they wanted. That's somewhere for us to grow in terms of maturity," he said after the match.
