Preston North End beat Huddersfield Town 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw at Goodison Park on Saturday, advancing to the second round of the Carabao Cup despite playing more than an hour of the first-round tie with ten men.
The tie was moved from Deepdale, where a new hybrid pitch was still being installed, to Everton's former home for the weekend fixture, played the week before the Championship season kicked off. The club said the £1.5m-plus pitch would be ready in time for Preston's first home league game of the season, against Wolverhampton Wanderers on 22 August.
Preston were reduced to ten men in the 20th minute when Lewis Gibson was sent off for violent conduct. Huddersfield's Radinio Balker put the visitors ahead in the 37th minute, and the lead held until substitute Jusef Erabi equalised in the 92nd minute to force a shootout.
Huddersfield had the better of the ball for long spells with ten-man Preston chasing the game, finishing with 54% possession to Preston's 46%, but the sides were level on shots, with ten apiece and three on target for Preston to Huddersfield's two. Huddersfield were also the more heavily penalised side, committing 16 fouls to Preston's 11, though Preston edged the corner count 7-6.
