League One's bottom side Port Vale produced one of the great FA Cup shocks as they knocked Premier League Sunderland out of the competition 1-0 to book a quarter-final place for the first time since 1954.
Ben Waine's first-half header settled a hard-fought tie in front of a capacity 10,685 crowd at Vale Park, sending Jon Brady's side through to the last eight despite the 56 league places separating them from Régis Le Bris's Black Cats.
An Early Warning and an Unorthodox Save
Sunderland nearly took the lead in the fourth minute when Vale goalkeeper Joe Gauci inadvertently punched a corner back across his own goal, only for Eliezer Mayenda's close-range header to strike the post before Kyle John scrambled the loose ball behind.
