Pogba leaves Monaco after contract terminated a year early

Paul Pogba has left AS Monaco after the two parties terminated his contract a year early, with the Ligue 1 club saying the objectives set when he joined had only been "partially achieved." His deal had been due to run until June 2027, but the 33-year-old departs as a free agent just before the start of the new season, having made only six appearances in 2025-26, five of them from the bench.

Pogba joined Monaco last summer after serving a doping ban that had kept him out of professional football since 2023, when he last played for Juventus. He tested positive for the banned substance DHEA and was initially banned for four years, before the Court of Arbitration for Sport reduced the suspension to 18 months and he was permitted to return to professional football in March 2025.

Monaco's chief executive, Thiago Scuro, said the club was "very happy to have shared this journey together" with Pogba, adding: "While the outcome is not what we had hoped for, it should not overshadow the enthusiasm that surrounded his return to club football, nor the fact that Paul was able to return to the pitch and to professional football during this period. We wish Paul all the very best for the future."

Pogba said: "I would like to thank the president and the management, my teammates, all the staff members and every supporter who believed in me." He added: "Representing this club and the principality was an incredible experience. AS Monaco is an incredible club and although I did not play as many games as I had hoped, I will always be grateful for the opportunity to wear their colours."
