Palmer's Early Strike Sends Newport to the Bottom

· Match Report

Swindon Town sent struggling Newport County to the bottom of League Two with a 1-0 win at Rodney Parade, an early Ollie Palmer finish proving enough to settle a tight contest.

Ian Holloway's side briefly climbed to the top of the table before Walsall went back above them later in the afternoon, while the result heaped more pressure on Newport manager David Hughes, who felt there was "not a lot in the game".

A Returning Striker Makes the Difference

Palmer, a former Wrexham striker, was a late call-up to the XI after Swindon's leading scorer Aaron Drinan was injured in the warm-up. He made the most of his chance in the 10th minute, getting to Finley Munroe's free-kick from the left first and cleverly flicking the ball past Nik Tzanev and inside the far post via the right upright.
