Palhinha overhead kick sparks Tottenham past Doncaster into Carabao Cup fourth round

— Match Report

Tottenham continued their bright start to life under Thomas Frank by easing past League One Doncaster 3-0 to seal a place in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup, where they will travel to holders Newcastle in the week commencing 27 October.

Frank showed the depth of his squad by making seven changes from the side that drew 2-2 at Brighton on Saturday, yet Spurs did not skip a beat. Joao Palhinha's spectacular overhead kick, a Jay McGrath own goal and a last-kick finish from Brennan Johnson settled a tie that Doncaster, for all their recent rise, were never able to truly threaten.

Early warning signs and a spectacular opener

Mathys Tel had two opportunities to score inside the opening three minutes, with one shot blocked and another seeing him fluff an air kick from eight yards after a Johnson cross. Spurs did not have to wait long for the breakthrough, though, when Bayern Munich loanee Palhinha, deployed at centre-back, struck on 14 minutes after Doncaster failed to clear a Xavi Simons corner.
