Newcastle United ended a dismal sequence of five straight defeats in all competitions with a 3-1 victory over a Europe-chasing Brighton & Hove Albion at St James' Park, handing manager Eddie Howe a timely and deeply emotional boost in front of the club's Saudi owners. William Osula, Dan Burn and Harvey Barnes scored the goals as the Magpies recovered their nerve after Jack Hinshelwood threatened to spoil the afternoon.
Chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan and minority owner Jamie Reuben watched on from the directors' box just days after Howe had faced "difficult questions" from Public Investment Fund officials at Matfen Hall in Northumberland following a torrid run of nine defeats in 12 league games. Brighton, unbeaten since early March, ultimately had no answer, their remarkable run ending on a day when their pre-match mixed martial arts set-piece preparation conspicuously failed to pay off.
Brighton's bright start undone by a goalkeeping blunder
Brighton made the stronger start and monopolised possession early on. Hinshelwood was denied by a diving stop from Nick Pope inside the opening two minutes, and Carlos Baleba then watched a long-range strike skim off the top of the crossbar. For a spell it looked like more of the same for a Newcastle side low on confidence, with Osula firing narrowly wide of the upright at the other end.
