Oldham Athletic beat Port Vale 2-0 at Boundary Park in matchday one of the League Two season, both goals scored by Calum Kavanagh in the second half.
Kavanagh opened the scoring in the 59th minute and added a second in the 74th, either side of a run of bookings on both sides. Oliver Norburn was the first player cautioned, in the 12th minute; Port Vale's George Hall (38th) and Oldham's Favour Fawunmi (39th) followed before half-time, with Port Vale's George Byers (56th), Jordan Lawrence-Gabriel (58th) and Liam Gordon (86th) also shown yellow. No player was sent off.
Port Vale made three substitutions after Kavanagh's opener: Mo Faal and Onel Hernández replaced George Byers and Jaheim Headley in the 67th minute, and Connor Hall came on for Lewis Montsma in the 72nd. Oldham withdrew two-goal Kavanagh for Ryan Woods in the 81st minute, then made a double change in the 87th, sending on Elliott Nevitt and Tom Pett for Mike Fondop and Favour Fawunmi.
The result leaves Oldham fourth in the early League Two table on three points from their opening fixture; Port Vale are 20th, without a point after theirs.
