Okoli header sends Leicester City past Northampton Town in League Cup

· Match Report

Leicester City needed only one moment of quality to get past League Two opposition in this English League Cup second-round tie at the King Power Stadium: Caleb Okoli's 14th-minute header, set up by Luke Thomas, was enough to see off Northampton Town 1-0. The score was 1-0 at half-time and stayed that way, Leicester closing out the win in front of 9,792 supporters.

Leicester dominated the ball, taking 77.2% of possession to Northampton's 22.8%, and had the better of the chances too: eight attempts on goal to four, three of Leicester's on target against two for Northampton, and seven corners won to Northampton's five. Discipline was the away side's stronger suit, however; Bobby De Cordova-Reid, Sammy Braybrooke, Wes Burns and Tom Watson were all booked for Leicester, while Harvey Saunders picked up Northampton's only yellow card, deep into stoppage time.

Both sides used the game to rotate. Leicester made a double substitution in the 60th minute, Tom Watson and Wes Burns replacing Stephy Mavididi and Will Alves, with further changes at 78, 85 and 86 minutes. Northampton made five substitutions of their own between the 62nd and 82nd minutes.
