Newport sign goalkeeper Jake Turner from Gillingham

· Transfer News

Newport County have signed goalkeeper Jake Turner following his departure from Gillingham, where he spent the past four seasons and made more than 50 appearances for the club.

Turner, 27, began his career at Bolton Wanderers, where he represented England at under-18 and under-19 level, before moving to Newcastle United. With first-team opportunities limited at St James' Park, he was loaned to Morecambe and then Colchester United before making the switch to Gillingham.

The signing adds to a Newport goalkeeping department that had only Jordan Wright and Shaun MacDonald under contract heading into the summer. Wright was forced into 137 saves last season as Newport conceded 77 goals and kept just seven clean sheets, one of the division's weakest defensive records.

Newport won their opening League Two fixture of the season 3-0 at home to Rochdale and sit second in the table.
